In lieu of a foreword
I have been searching for a bibliography on the subject of the relief for years.
! A bibliography does exist, but not of the kind that would assist me in setting down
the pinciples of the art of the relief and the practical and stmctural knowledge
on the subject. Most of what is available deals with specific reliefs, and contains
descriptions that are mainly of an archaeological or literary interest, with reference
to themes, uses or needs, but is definitely not the type of tool I would like to have
in wnting this essay.
I have, therefore, been obliged to reson to the usual methodology: to set down and
outline all the elements that constitute and characterise the relief. I believe that my
intent and approach to the subject will become apparent in the course of this paper,
thus making it both useful and enlightening.
I have also attempted to avoid the use of any literary embellishments, so that the text
may remain, I would say, plain and concise and the main stress fall on the thoughts
and the technical proposals presented.
After writing this paper, I discussed, revised and completed it with the help of older
and more expenenced colleagues who have expressed large parts of their creativity
working in relief.
I have also had to resort to written texts, to my own personal knowledge, the studies
I have made on occasions in museums and archaeological sites in Greece, England,
France, Italy and other countries, and naturally to whatever small experience of the
subject I myself possess.
This study began a long time ago and was completed in 1988. Since then, however,
it has been complemented and amended in several places.
